{"id":12893,"date":"2014-01-17T17:57:09","date_gmt":"2014-01-17T23:57:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ipromo.com\/blog\/?p=1165"},"modified":"2014-01-17T17:57:09","modified_gmt":"2014-01-17T23:57:09","slug":"promotional-items-replace-ability-will-replace","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.ipromo.com\/promotional-items-replace-ability-will-replace\/","title":{"rendered":"Replace-ability: Will they replace theirs with yours?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>At a recent trade show, I was handed an iPhone case branded with a company\u2019s logo.\u00a0 It seemed like it could protect my phone well.\u00a0 It was prominently decorated with a logo of a company that I liked.\u00a0 My immediate thought as they handed it to me, \u201cNice giveaway.\u00a0 This is a trendy, in-demand piece of swag.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then I tossed it.<\/p>\n<p>Yes, I have an iPhone and I care about protecting it.\u00a0 But like most people, I already have a case that I like, trust, and that I chose for aesthetics.\u00a0\u00a0 As shallow as this sounds, my phone is a status symbol, highly visible to friends and co-workers, that sends a message I want to control.\u00a0 It would take a lot for me to replace the case I have.\u00a0 It would have to be a case that appears to be of greater quality and reflect my unique and personal sense of style.\u00a0 Good luck with that, swag pushers.<\/p>\n<p><b>Replace-ability risk can kill your ROI.<\/b><br \/>\nWhen your promotional project\u2019s ROI depends on impressions, knowing that your product will be adopted is a factor you need to consider. \u00a0One of the biggest reasons that a product isn\u2019t adopted is because people aren\u2019t willing to replace the one they currently own with one you\u2019re offering.\u00a0 And if your product isn\u2019t adopted, impressions are lost.<\/p>\n<p><b>When is replace-ability a risk?<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em><b>Most of your audience already owns one<\/b><\/em>.\u00a0 If only 5% of your audience owns this to begin with, then don\u2019t consider replace-ability a threat.\u00a0 If they already own one (no matter what product \u2013 pens, mugs, etc), there is always some risk that they have enough and don\u2019t feel they need another.<\/li>\n<li><em><b>Your audience tends to own only one<\/b><\/em>.\u00a0 Assuming risk factor #1, this really puts the pressure on your giveaway to be more valuable than their alternative; a product they are likely comfortable with and personally chose.<\/li>\n<li><em><b>Items used for status or personal expression<\/b><\/em>.\u00a0 If the item is considered fashionable and is highly visible to peers, then by adding a logo, you may be diminishing one of the key points of value.\u00a0 This would be more common with expensive or brand name items, like adding a corporate logo directly on an iPod.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Recommendations<\/b><br \/>\nIf you\u2019re using a product that has higher replace-ability risk, then we recommend the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b><em>Make your logo attractive on the product<\/em>.<\/b> \u00a0\u00a0If the logo color and design goes well with a product, it\u2019s easier to compliment the product with your logo.<\/li>\n<li><b><em>Be discreet with logo treatment<\/em>.<\/b> \u00a0It doesn\u2019t have to be an eye sore to get noticed.\u00a0 If they are using it every day, they\u2019ll notice.<\/li>\n<li><em><b>Have passionate, loyal customers<\/b><\/em>.\u00a0 You can consider yourself immune to this replace-ability risk if you do.<\/li>\n<li><em><b>Employee Gifts<\/b><\/em>.\u00a0 Your employees are the most likely to care about an item with your branded logo, and be advocates.
